Canadians should boycott the Apple TV

Apple may think that we are all complete suckers here in Canada, but… we aren’t.  Apple, you don’t have any freaking content worth viewing in the iTunes store in Canada (No TV shows, No Movies), so don’t try to get us waste our money on a device that is essentially useless to us.

Apple – Apple TV

Get your act together, and start getting content in the iTunes store.  Then come back and sell us your pretty hardware.  Until then… just go away.

I agree with you, idiots should boycott AppleTv. I mean, if apple doesn't have any users, they should attract content providers just by being cool right? Or wait, maybe if users start using a product, more content might be made for that product? naww, crazy talk there. I mean, why shouldn't every one just be a huge snob and say that *nothing* is available when you mean, nothing *you* are interested in is available? Screw everyone without your refined sensibilities, eh?

Well, "Some Guy", since you are from the U.S. (Minnesota, I see), not Canada, you don't quite have the same problem, do you? You have loads of iTunes content. In Canada we have SQUAT. Apple didn't sell any iPods until they had content in the iTunes store. And they won't sell any AppleTV's in Canada without content.

You and I are on the same page. Buying an AppleTV in Canada is senseless without the supporting content from iTunes Canada. I recently posted 'Boycott iTunes Canada' on my blog (2scoops.wordpress.com), hoping I could start a ground swell that would force iTunes Canada to get on the ball. The ground swell never started and truth be told my frustration was misguided. Instead of blaming iTunes Canada for the lack of 'TV Show' content. I should have attacked the Canadian Rights Holders; Canwest/Global and CTV. Global and CTV are the myopic, backward thinking company's that are delaying the introduction of valuable content on iTunes Canada. Without the TV Show and Movie content there is no AppleTV in Canada.

I agree. It is the Canadian rights holders would seem to be the bad guys, but pressure has to be applied somewhere. If Apple wants to sell these things in Canada, maybe they'll push a CanWest and CTV a little harder.

Please take a look at the parental controls in the preferences section of the latest version of iTunes. One can now restrict movies based on Canadian ratings. That might indicate something...

I'm not sure I agree, at least not 100%. While I agree that there is absolutely no content on the Canadian ITMS, that really isn't much of an issue for me. I create most of the content myself that I'd want to watch using the appleTV. I've got a convertX PVR for my mac which I use to record TV, movies, etc and it's got a handy little iPod button which exports the recorded media directly to iTunes. Also - the appleTV can be used for slideshows of photos, or even to play your music so even if you can't buy TV shows or movies off the ITMS, I still think it's useful. I haven't bought one, and I'm not sure I will to be honest. I've been thinking that a mac mini is a good substitue for the appleTV, albeit a bit more expensive - you get the same functionality plus A LOT more.
