Collective IQ of the European press drops overnight

CBC News: Protest ramps up over Muhammad cartoons

Islamic tradition prohibits any depiction of the prophet, even a respectful one, on the grounds that it could promote idolatry.

Unbelievable.  My personal religious beliefs aside, I firmly believe that one should respect the religious beliefs of others.  And while I can believe that the original Danish newspaper published the cartoons without understanding the nature of the offense …  what is wrong with the rest of these idiots?!?  I can only presume that the collective IQ of the “free press” in Europe dropped over-night.

I can, without any effort at all, imagine dozens of so-called humorous cartoons that would be offensive to Christians.  No newspaper (European, Canadian, or American) publishes such cartoons… and why do you think that is?  Because humorous or not, it’s stupid and it’s wrong to publish material that is guaranteed to be disrespectful to a significant percentage of your readership.

And if one of these cartoons does slip out, unnoticed by editors, what happens?  The newspaper publishes an apology.  Because it’s the right thing to do.  Period.  End of discussion.

All this crap about “free press” and “free speech” that is being used to defend their rights to publish this material is sophistry.  I hope one of these idiots grabs a brain soon, and starts to use it.  The world has enough problems without the “free press” running around throwing (metaphorical) gasoline on (metaphorical) fires.
