Buying Bargain Nokia Bears Bitter Ironies – Consumerist

He bought his European model Nokia cellphone from newegg and Nokia US won’t fix it. When he called the UK office, they said they can’t ship outside the country. Aggravating!

This “can’t ship to” crap is just stupid in the global economy. Some smart cookie with connections in multiple countries is going to clean up, offering a “store and forward” service.

I'll admit it, I suck at bookkeeping

Posted by admin, Fri Apr 07 08:58:44 UTC 2006

I just met with my new accountant this morning. I like her already. Why do I have a new accountant? It seems that my old accountant (of years and years) has been promoted. I guess being elected president of a world-wide accounting association is a promotion, isn’t it? Anyway, as an independent consultant, I am incorporated, so I need an accountant.

Over the years, I have hinted and hinted to my old accountant that I’d really rather find someone else (like someone at the accounting firm) to perform my bookkeeping. He always laughed, and said I did a good enough job. Of course I did a good job. I don’t accept shoddy work, especially from myself. No matter how much time it takes. And it takes me a lot of time to get my accounts up-to-date for year end every year.

But today, since I was starting fresh with someone new, I threw myself on her mercy, and admitted it. I suck at bookkeeping. It takes me hours and hours, that eventually amount to days and days, just to get my yearly books done. Her horrified look was somewhat entertaining. Even better, she immediately insisted that I stop wasting my time, and just bring all my paperwork in, and after personal tax season is over, she make sure it gets all entered. And she said it would only take her people a couple of hours to do it.

A couple of hours?? I could almost cry. Yup, I must really suck at bookkeeping. And now… I don’t have to do it anymore. YAY!!!!

Continuous Integration Server Feature Matrix – DamageControl – Confluence

Stumbled across this great comparison of continuous integration tools. If it stays up-to-date, this will be a great way of figuring out which tool works best for your next project.

To God, From Dogs

Posted by admin, Fri Mar 17 18:12:20 UTC 2006

Dog Letters to God

Dear God, When we get to Heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it the same old story?

I can’t seem to find a link to the PPS version of this, so I’ll post it. It is a very cute slideshow for dog lovers. But that’s not the point.

I find it highly entertaining that this PowerPoint file actually hangs my Intel iMac when opened with Microsoft PowerPoint. And it looks like crap in Keynote, with lots of text cut off. But when I got home to my NeoOfficeJ on my PowerBook G4, it works perfectly…

Please, please, get NeoOffice working on the Intel Macs soon.

Teamprise? Are you kidding me?

Posted by admin, Fri Mar 17 09:32:06 UTC 2006

Team System development server released to manufacturing

LaPlante said that Microsoft is committed to developing a rich “partner ecosystem.” That may mean some strange bedfellows. LaPlante’s presentation included a demonstration of Teamprise 1.0, which supports a Linux-based interface into the VSTS environment. LaPlante said, “In 18 years of doing this, I have never done a Linux demo on stage.
The last time I heard a name that bad was Borland’s ill-fated attempt to change the corporate name to Inprise. We all know how well that worked.

Monty Python’s Silly Walks Generator

Usually someone else sends me these things.  Today, I followed a link from a CNET blog, and discovered a whole new way of wasting time that I just have to share.

Ogg vorbis for iTunes

Posted by admin, Fri Feb 17 02:59:32 UTC 2006

Well… YAY! When I first made the move to Mac, it was pre-Tiger, and I found an Ogg Vorbis plugin that let me play my Ogg files in iTunes. Then there was the move to Tiger and an upgrade (to QuickTime, I think) rendered the plugin unusable/unstable. I watched for months for an update, and then I gave up. My husband even started the loooong, boring chore of re-ripping our CD’s using iTunes.

Today, someone on a mailing list was talking about Ogg files and iTunes, and I thought… that can’t be right. But I did a quick Google, and discovered this:

Xiph.Org: QuickTime Components

Xiph QuickTime Components (XiphQT) is, in short, the solution for Mac and Windows users who want to use Xiph formats in any QuickTime-based application, e.g. playing Ogg Vorbis in iTunes.
Works like I charm. I just did a “File | Add to Library” in iTunes, and pointed at one of my Ogg albums, and it copied the files, and imported most of the metadata, too. No album art, and no track numbers, but I’m not going to complain.

Zillow - Canadians need not apply

Posted by admin, Tue Feb 14 02:04:23 UTC 2006

I was reading a lot about Zillow this week, so I figured I should check it out. And when I entered “Calgary, AB” into the front page form…

Zillow.com – Your Edge in Real Estate

We could not find this area. Please check your spelling or enter a valid ZIP code.

I guess it’s just too hard for them to include Canada…
