Time for a little house cleaning

Last night I noticed that the hard drive on my year-old Powerbook was getting a little tight on free space, with less than 9 GB on a 80 GB drive. Since I didn’t think I actually had that much stuff, I thought I’d better figure out what kind of crap I had cluttering up all that space.

Enter Disk Inventory X

Now, there are lots of applications you can use, to help you find large files on your system, but I’ve always found the ones with a visual interface to be easiest to use. Disk Inventory X for the Mac is a superior example. It took me about 10 whole minutes to find all the files I needed to get rid of, and most of that was the time it took the application to evaluate the hard drive. It took only about 2 minutes for me to pick out all the stuff to delete. Because I needed to save some of the video files I found, it took me several hours of DVD burning, but I now have 29.55 GB of free space.

House cleaning is good. Now if I can just find something to help me clean out the basement…
